H.R. 5717 Proposes Insane Taxes on Gun and Ammo Purchases And…

HR-5717

On January 30, 2020, Rep. Henry C. “Hank,” Johnson, Jr. [D-GA-4] introduced House Bill H.R. 5717 – Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020, which, according to Rep. Johnson, is intentioned to…,

…end the epidemic of gun violence and build safer communities by strengthening Federal firearms laws and supporting gun violence research, intervention, and prevention initiatives.

In reality, this bill will make it much more difficult, if not impossible, for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their property against criminals. It will also pump vast amounts of money (from taxes) into coffers of anti-second amendment groups and organizations.

Tax on guns: 30% Tax on ammo: 50%.

H.R. 5717 provisions include:

  • raise the age to purchase from 18 to 21
  • adds 30% tax (on top of sales tax) on all guns purchases *
  • adds 50% tax (on top of sales tax) on all ammo purchases *
  • license req. ‘d to buy guns/ammo **
  • license req. ‘d for owned guns **
    * Proceeds will finance Community Violence Intervention Grant Program.
** The Attorney General will issue or deny a 10-year license.

Bill H.R. 5717 on gun/ammo taxes.

Explanation of the bill by Paul Glasco.

More H.R. 5717 provisions:

  • Create a nationwide gun registry (for law-abiding citizens).
How about a registry for illegal guns?
  • Ban almost all semiautomatic rifles.
    Bye, bye, AR-15.
  • Expand “Gun Free Zones.”
Criminals are going to love it.
  • Institute a federal Magazine Ban.
Sure, let’s ban all of them.
  • Implement a national “Red Flag” gun confiscation.
If your ex doesn’t like you, you’re in deep doo-doo.
  • Ration guns by making it illegal to purchase more than one firearm in any 30 days.
One bullet every six months would work much better 🙂
  • Force “Safe Storage” requirements on gun owners.
You’ll have to keep your weapons so safe that no one can get to them — even you.
  • Ban home builds.
Sorry MacGyver, you out of luck.
  • Ban suppressors.
Look like the earplug lobby carries lots of weight in D.C.
  • Force Federal Firearms Licensees to spend massive amounts of money to comply with new “security” requirements.
Let’s secure them out of business.

People say there’s a long way to go before H.R. 5717 will have a chance to become the law. It has to pass the House and the Senate and then be signed by the President. I agree. As it is, this proposal has a little chance to end up on the President’s desk.

BUT… (there’s always a but). Everything is possible.

Do you remember those first lawsuits against tobacco companies? Judges were throwing them out of the courtrooms while puffing on their cigarettes. Look now, a few decades later, smoking a cigarette can land you in jail.

So, because H.R. 5717, if it passes, will render every law-abiding gun owner a felon, I think it’s undoubtedly a good idea to call your Congressman at (202) 224-3121 (Rep. list by state) and press him or her to oppose this bill. NOW!
